Jun 14, 2019  Turning Stone Casino Resort overview. Turning Stone Casino Resort in Verona, New York became New York State’s first and only land-based casino when it opened in 1993. In fact, it wasn’t until 2002 when the Seneca Niagara Casino in Niagara Falls opened its doors that Turning Stone had any competition inside the state. The resort and casino is owned and operated by the Oneida Indian Nation.

Turning Stone Resort and Casino is an Indian gambling operation located in Verona, New York, in the heart of the state. It is owned and operated by the Oneida Indian Nation, who purchased the land for this purpose in the period between 1992 and 1993.

Governments had fought against the sovereignty of Indian tribes to operate their own casinos outside of state jurisdiction and regulation, and by the time the early 1990’s rolled around, it became clear that these challenges were not going to ever be successful and the courts were going to allow them to construct and operate casinos.

Seeing Connecticut open it’s first casino at Foxwoods, with another large casino in the state, Mohegan Sun, in development, the Oneida tribe looked to improve their economic standing by getting in on the casino business as well.

Construction was then completed on their bingo hall in 1996 and a year later they opened up New York State’s first casino. New York is not a state that has been open to casinos, and for years their casino traffic traveled south to Atlantic City, but now New York residents had both nearby options in Connecticut and one right in their own state.

Even today, there is still a fair bit of resistance from state officials to license casinos, but being on Indian land, the Oneida make their own rules, and they have chosen to permit a casino. They have chosen to build a very big and successful one at Turning Stone.

Casino

Initially, the hotel and casino were located in separate buildings, in other words people had to travel outside to go from one to the other, but now they are combined into one structure, which makes moving between them much more convenient.

The property grew as the years went by and in particular was expanded quite a bit in 2004 to accommodate even more guests and even more action. At 125,000 square feet of gaming space, it is one of the largest casinos in the United States now.

There are plans now to expand the property by adding 300,000 square feet of retail space, making the resort and casino even more impressive and also adding even more value to the experience of their guests.

For a time, alcohol was not served on the property while the tribe was waiting for their license to serve alcohol to be approved by the state. Once the state denied their applications though, they simply decided that they were going to exercise their sovereignty on this issue as well and alcohol is now being served again.

Turning Stone has certainly been a success thus far and is another case of state regulators getting trumped. While regulators sit on their hands, Turning Stone is doing very well indeed, and the state’s loss is their win, as well as a win for their many guests.
